The first split
Science-led · frontier tellings labeled in the text
The universe began hot and dense, and it has been expanding and cooling ever since. That is the measured ground the story stands on: an early cosmos of almost unimaginable heat, thinning and cooling through a sequence of epochs, each one anchored in evidence, until the world became cool enough for atoms, for stars, and eventually for us.
Physics speaks of one becoming two in its own voice. Energy resolves into particle and antiparticle — pair creation, the most literal one-becoming-two in nature. A symmetric early state differentiated into distinct sides as the universe cooled, in the electroweak and QCD transitions and through the Higgs mechanism. And beneath both stands CPT symmetry, a theorem of fundamental physics: the mirror structure of matter is not an accident of the telling but a consequence of the laws themselves.
Then comes the split this house is named for, and the story states its number and its mystery in the same breath. For every billion antiparticles in the early universe there were a billion and one particles, and that small excess is everything that remains. The asymmetry is measured: η = 6.12 × 10⁻¹⁰ (Planck 2018). Why it is that size — what made matter win over antimatter at all — nobody knows. No baryon-number violation has ever been observed in a laboratory, and the known physics falls short of explaining it by orders of magnitude.
One part of the beginning is told here in the story register, labeled as such. Inflation — a proposed brief era of extremely rapid expansion that set the stage — is the paradigm the field works in, and each specific model of it is a hypothesis. No direct evidence for it is yet in hand, and this page does not say that inflation happened. It says the paradigm is on the frontier, and its models are being tested.
Two further tellings of the beginning are published work, named to their authors and told as tellings. Boyle, Finn and Turok propose a CPT-symmetric universe: a universe and an anti-universe paired across the bang. Julian Barbour’s Janus point places a central low-complexity condition with arrows of time pointing away from it in both directions. Both carry tests that are in progress, not results: the CPT pair predicts Majorana neutrinos, an exactly massless lightest neutrino, and no primordial gravitational waves. The story keeps those predictions beside the telling, as tests still running.
The carrying
Science · stated as measured
What followed the beginning can be audited, link by link, and the first weld is the strongest. Primordial nucleosynthesis — the forging of the lightest elements in the first minutes — and the cosmic microwave background, the light released when the universe first became transparent, are two independent witnesses. They return the same baryon density within about 1 percent. The story does not hide the defect inside that agreement: the lithium-7 abundance still disagrees by about a factor of three, a live discrepancy mentioned here because the chain is only honest if its weak points are named.
The elements were forged in stars — fusion in stellar cores, the slow neutron-capture process in aging giant stars, iron arriving by two routes — and we are, in the plain physical sense, stardust. The honesty is per element. Carbon, oxygen and iron have named birthplaces. Gold and the heaviest elements are different: their birthplace in neutron-star mergers is inferred, resting on one well-observed kilonova, and this page says inferred because inferred is what it is.
From seeds visible in the microwave background, gravity grew the cosmic web — filaments and clusters of galaxies spanning the observable universe. A young instrument now audits the darkest part of that web: gravitational-wave astronomy counts 218 confident detections in its current census (GWTC-4.0), black holes colliding across cosmic time, their population structure only beginning to emerge.
Dark matter is required by gravity and unknown in identity. Its gravitational evidence stands on five independent lines — the motions of galaxies, the bending of light, the microwave background among them — while decades of searches for the particle itself have returned nothing. The story holds both facts at once: the gravity is established; the thing itself is not identified.
Chemistry travelled far before any planet formed. More than 300 molecular species are catalogued in interstellar space, and samples returned from the asteroid Bennu carried all five nucleobases — the letters of the genetic code, found off Earth. The inventory is strong. Then the chain reaches its thinnest link, and the story crosses it on a marked bridge: how that inventory assembled into a self-replicating, evolvable system has never been demonstrated end to end. The story does not resolve that gap. It names it, and walks on with the question open.
The chamber
Science, and the house’s telling — labeled where it changes
At the chain’s concentrations sit black holes. A black hole is the maximum-entropy object for its region — nothing that fits in the same space can hold more disorder, more hidden information. Its horizon area does not decrease, and that area theorem is no longer only mathematics: it has been confirmed observationally in gravitational-wave data.
The universe’s entropy accounting shows how completely black holes dominate it. The observable universe holds about 3.1 × 10¹⁰⁴ k of entropy (Egan and Lineweaver 2010), and almost all of it sits in supermassive black holes. The largest entropy known belongs to the de Sitter horizon at the edge of the observable universe: about 10¹²² k.
Here the register changes, and the page labels the change. The house tells an hourglass duoverse: two bulbs, black holes as paired mouths of one shared throat, a chamber lifecycle of intake, impound, audit and redeployment. That telling is a hypothesis — the founder’s frame, not a finding. It travels with its surrender clause, stated in the text because the clause is part of the claim: if population studies reach the precision to see the correlation and find nothing, the pairing is surrendered.
Two named programs stand beside it, each at its own grade. The Planck-star bounce of Rovelli and Vidotto proposes that a black hole can tunnel into a white hole; it is a research program, unconfirmed, with no signature yet observed. ER=EPR, the conjecture of Maldacena and Susskind that connects wormholes with quantum entanglement, is a named conjecture with no direct evidence. The story tells both, and promotes neither.
The pattern
Science, and the house’s telling — labeled where it changes
The founder’s thesis stands at the centre of this house, and this section examines it rather than assumes it. The thesis, in his framing, is that information manifests the same way throughout time, at every scale — one pattern, repeated from the first split to the present page. What follows is what the evidence does to that sentence.
One sentence of it is licensed as science, and it is narrower than the banner: the same mathematical structures recur across scales where a derivation connects them to a shared constraint, inside bounded windows. Its exemplars are among the deepest verified facts in science. Universality classes show unrelated systems sharing the same mathematics near a phase change because the same constraints govern them. Limit theorems force the same distributions on sums of almost anything. Noether’s theorem ties every symmetry to a conservation law. Maximum-entropy forms recur wherever the same kind of constraint is all that is known. And Landauer’s principle — that erasing one bit costs a measured amount of heat — has been measured in experiment: information is physical, at a price, at every scale where the measurement has been made.
The breaks are part of the story, not footnotes to it. Each scale also generates law of its own: chemistry is not a large atom, and a living cell is not a large molecule — new law emerges as systems grow, and neighbouring scales decouple. The flagship claim of scale-free networks, tested severely across hundreds of real networks, collapsed: almost none were strongly scale-free. The pattern is real where a derivation earns it, inside its window. Beyond the window, the honest sentence is the narrower one, and that is the sentence this house keeps.
Time, and the dark side of the glass
Science, and the house’s telling — labeled where it changes
Time itself is drawn as an hourglass in relativity, and that drawing is literal geometry. At any event, a past light cone holds everything that could have reached it and a future light cone holds everything it can still reach; the two cones meet at the event, point to point. The sand of that glass has one honest referent: entropy. The thermodynamic arrow — the direction in which entropy increases — is the direction time is felt to flow, and Landauer’s measured cost ties even memory to it: to forget, physically, is to pay in heat.
First, the founder’s telling of dark energy as the ledger — STORY register, the house’s telling, labeled:
"We cannot see most of the universe's energy; we know it only because the expansion's books will not balance without it — and one way to tell that story is that the cosmos keeps its accounts on the far side of its horizons, in a dark ledger whose size is set by everything that has crossed out of sight. That is a story about a real ledger-shaped hole in our physics — the value is unexplained, the horizon really does hold the universe's largest entropy — and not yet a claim about what, if anything, is written there."
Named beside it, as their work and not the house’s: holographic dark energy is a published program which derives the dark-energy density from the universe’s size and its information bound, instead of leaving it an unexplained tuning. It is the nearest published relative of the telling above, and it stays credited to its authors.
Second, harmony — PHILOSOPHY register, told as the house’s reflection, labeled:
"The universe is not holding dark energy and matter in balance — it is passing, once, through the brief age in which they are comparable, on its way to an emptiness that lasts forever at a temperature of about 2 × 10⁻³⁰ kelvin. What is true in the intuition is narrower and stronger than a harmony: only the consistent and the stable survive to be seen — every theory that contradicts itself is discarded, every configuration that tears itself apart is gone, and what remains, remains."
Third, the Sigma-0 Loop — HYPOTHESIS register, the founder’s frame, labeled:
"Even physics will not quite call the darkness at the end an ending. If the far universe is a finite room, mathematics promises it will not stay still forever — given time beyond imagining, what settled will stir again. Other tellings give the cosmos a next aeon, a bounce, another lap. None of them has been seen. This house tells it as a checkpoint, not a terminus — a sigma-zero, the counting starting over — and says plainly what it does not know: whether the next lap runs here, or somewhere else, or above, or below."
The roads physics itself entertains toward such a return are three different roads, not one: Poincaré recurrence, theorem-conditional and shadowed by the Boltzmann-brain problem; conformal cyclic cosmology, whose claimed signatures returned null after cleaning; and bounce models, which carry Tolman’s entropy problem. The story names them separately because they are separate, and none of them has been seen.
Fourth, the pure-logic state and its crash twin — PHILOSOPHY register, the house’s moral architecture, told with its counterweight, labeled:
"The house believes what it can prove of itself: that what is consistent endures and what contradicts itself compounds toward zero — and it holds this as a law for its own house, not as a finding about the stars. Physics is stricter and colder: even a perfect mind pays for every record it erases, order survives only where a gradient feeds it, and the universe's cold has a floor. The lights do not stay on for logic's sake. They stay on — here, in the house — because someone keeps the accounts."
The house’s way of seeing
Story · the house’s telling, labeled
The house reads the cosmos through instruments of its own making, and this section presents them as exactly that — the house’s way of seeing, carrying no physical warrant. Its architecture begins from the split: one dividing into two poles, the two poles read as 32 and 32, together forming the 64-bit view the house calls the Diamond word. It is the grammar the estate computes in, and it is presented here as an instrument, not as a structure found in nature.
The estate keeps two ledgers: a white ledger of public proof, where a claim can be checked by anyone, and a dark ledger of private capability, where what must stay sealed stays sealed. The rhyme between those ledgers and the cosmos — accounts kept on both sides of a horizon — is an analogy, and the page labels it as one: PHILOSOPHY, with a FRONTIER neighbour in horizon thermodynamics. A rhyme is not a mechanism. The house uses it to see with, and does not borrow physics’ authority for it.
What we do not know
Open · no one knows
Some questions this story has circled remain open — not as failures of the telling, but as findings. They are listed here plainly, and left open.
1. What made the matter–antimatter asymmetry? The size is measured; the mechanism is unknown, and no laboratory has ever observed the violation it requires.
2. Did inflation happen — and is the beginning a beginning, a mirror, or a middle?
3. How does information return from an evaporating black hole, and what are the inner states of an ordinary spinning black hole?
4. What is dark matter? What is dark energy? Together they are about 95% of the universe’s budget — gravitationally required, physically unidentified.
5. What causes the Hubble tension — the persistent disagreement between the two ways of measuring how fast the universe expands?
6. How did chemistry assemble into life — how did monomers become a self-replicating, evolvable system?
7. Why was the early universe’s entropy so low? Every arrow in this story traces back to that one unexplained input.
8. Is time fundamental, or does it emerge from something deeper?
9. Do paired black holes correlate beyond every local explanation? The test that could answer it has not yet been run at decisive precision.
10. What is consciousness? The evidence chain of astronomy ends before this link, and the story hands the question over honestly rather than dissolving it.
11. Where would the next lap run — the same realm, another, above, or below? The founder left this open in his own words — I don't know — and the story preserves it open exactly so.
